Gabriel had barely even wanted to go to school. He wanted to stay home and practice his telekinesis more. He hadn't mastered it yet, after all, and that was much more exciting than anything that was bound to happen at school. But he knew he had to go in order to not let his mother know anything was up. The last thing he wanted to do right now was make her suspicious. Not when they were going to be leaving soon anyways.

Which was why he was sitting in chemistry class now, listening to the instructions from his teacher over the experiment they were conducting. It wasn't really enjoyable, working with someone who hated his guts, but he didn't see any reason to go out of his way to switch partners. It would be a hassle. So he dealt with Jane and her death glares and just focused on his work.

But apparently, he was focusing a little too hard at one point, because the glass test tube Jane was holding over the flames shattered from his telekinesis and the liquid inside caused the flames to shoot up, lighting her hair on fire.

"Oh my god, what happened, my hair, my hair, someone get something for my hair," She screeched in a voice that could only be described as shrill. But before anyone could grab anything, the smoke reached the smoke detector, causing the fire alarm and sprinklers to go off, soaking everyone.

Jane wasn't hurt, luckily, but about half of her hair was burnt off now, and she'd probably have to cut the rest off to match. Gabriel was trying his best not to laugh as the teacher ushured them outside for regular fire procedures.

What were they going to do for jobs? For money? To survive? To not starve to death? So many thoughts buzzed through his head, among the imagines of his mother's dead body, and he couldn't focus.

He squeezed her hand tightly, the only thing that seemed real at all anymore.

He grip on her hand hurt, chaffed, but Elle didn't mind. Behind her mask of determination, panic began to stutter her heart. What once felt like a blessing--being with Gabriel forever where ever they wanted to be--was now a question of being safe. Surviving.

She sped up. It seemed to take much too long to get to her house. She imagined the school finding the bodies--when? Right now, as she approached the door? Five minutes ago? In the next moment?

Shaking slightly with her key, Elle unlocked the door and pushed inside, immediately running upstairs. She already had started packing a bag, and Elle had to extract her hand from Gabriel to start raiding her jewelry--all gold and silver and diamonds. Her Daddy would have some, too.

Her eyes rested on the small, ticking box Gabriel had fixed for her on her dresser, and she passed by him to clutch at it desperately and put it in the bag too.

"My dad's room is down the hall," she said in a strained voice. "Take all the gold you see. He has a lot of watches on top of his dresser. Some clothes might fit, too. Hurry."

Gabriel nodded quietly. He didn't want to leave Elle, he didn't want her out of his sight, but he knew he had to listen, had to function despite how he wanted to just break down more than anything else.

He made his way into her father's bedroom, looking around the area curiously. Everything Bob owned seemed to say that he had been an important man, special. The kind of man his mother always wanted him to be. The kind of man he would never be now.

He tried to push away those thoughts as he began to grab as many things as he could, throwing them into a bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life. It almost seemed as if everything Bob had touched had turned into gold. It was weird.

Without him in the room, Elle felt empty, felt the loose threads in her strain, and maybe a few of them broke, too. She choked on a hitching breath and haphazardly shed her dress for jeans and one of Gabriel's sweater's, pulling on worn sneakers instead of her heels. She threw some clothes--hardly anything--amongst all her valuables, zipped it up, and all but flew down the hall back to him.

She sucked in a needy, relieved breath when he saw him--still here, still moving, even though his eyes were scary, open, unlike anything she'd seen before.

She wondered what happened. What she did. Was this because of her, because she cornered him into killing his mother? The worst part was she wasn't even sorry, not really. Just worried, so worried he'd resent her for something that wasn't even wrong. No matter what he said, he seemed to think it was.

Maybe they weren't so similar. So much the same as she'd thought. And the painful part was it just made her want him, love him more. She needed to understand. Needed to know this could be salvaged.

"Are you ready?" she asked breathlessly, her mind reeling, her eyes wide and terrified.

It was strange, as he placed each item of gold away in his bag, his mind began to clear. As much as he loved his mother, she would have only held him back, in the long run. Without her around, he really could be whatever he wanted, special. So much more than just the son of a watchmaker.

And he never would have had the opportunity without Elle.

Breathing became easier as he compartmentalized his grief, pushing it away in a tiny cavern where he almost couldn't feel it anymore.

At her words he looked up at her, nodding. His eyes were more steady now, calm and collected. "I'm ready," He murmured softly. He took a step closer to her now, pressing a soft kiss against her lips.

She knew they didn't have time for it, not at all, but her eyes closed and she leaned, pressed against him, prolonging the kiss. She felt starved for him, for some sort of comfort, some anchor. It was typical, of course, now that his hands were sure and his gaze wasn't so vacant that she started to lose it, a little. "I love you," she whispered against his lips, clutching at his shirt desperately. "Are you okay?"

He held her close to him, running his fingers through her hair gently, glad for her warmth next to him. It was a nice comfort. "I think so," He whispered softly. He was still shaken, but better then he had been earlier.

She nodded gratefully and sucked in a shaking breath, wedging her head under her chin and rubbing her face into the center of his chest. Good, she thought, and let her shoulders fall and her breath to even as she relaxed. That was what mattered.

He held her close, just taking a slow, deep breath as he closed his eyes temporary. It might never be as simple as things were before, but it was going to be okay. He had to believe that.

She had to believe it, too. For better or worse, it was this or death. They'd already made that clear to each other. She squeezed him tighter, tilted her head up to kiss his neck, his Adam's apple, nuzzle into his pulse. She wished they could just stay here forever, until everything else just went away.

"We'll take the chauffeur's car as far as past the city," she whispered. "It's parked across the street. We'll dump it and find another one. Take the back roads from there, okay? Until we can get into Canada."

Having a plan always helped her calm down.

He nodded his head in agreement. He liked having a plan too. It was oddly comforting to at least know what they were doing. It was better than nothing. He nodded, leaning in to press a kiss against her forehead.

"Okay."

He never thought he would have to flee the country, but things didn't always turn out the way people planned. He paused for a moment, a thought occuring to him.

"Would there be a list...of people with powers in Canada on your father's computer?"

Her brows furrowed, and she hesitated for a moment, a bit thrown off by the pointed, random question. "I don't..." She shook her head. "Maybe. There's no time, Gabriel. Our homes are the first place they'll look."

He sighed a little in disappointment. If he had powers other than just the telekinesis, maybe they wouldn't have to run so much. "I guess you're right," He murmured softly.

She sobered further at his fallen expression and frowned, pulling away from him. She hated it when he wasn't happy. "It's okay. Maybe his laptop is here, too," she said with a reassuring smile, and walked over to pull out the littered briefcase she knew he slid under his bed.

Sometimes he kept it at work, but judging by the case's weight, Gabriel might be in luck. Quickly, she spun in the code that Daddy never knew she'd figured out, and opened it on the bed.

There it was, his small little notebook. She looked towards Gabriel for approval, smirking victoriously.

He smiled softly, looking down at the laptop as she popped open the briefcase. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, nuzzling her neck from behind. "We'll take it with us, then."

After all, they didn't want to waste time trying to get the information now, while they were still inside the house. She was right before, there just wasn't time to waste like that.

She grinned, humming out a content sigh and tipping her head to the side, instinctively, for him. Then she shut the briefcase with a click and spun around to face him, kissing him once more, nipping at his smiling lip with a soft, wanting purr and a caught breath. It seemed with every passing moment he was acting more and more like himself, and Elle wasn't going to question it, not now. "Okay, let's go," she whispered.

It was surprisingly easy to compartmentalize his grief, to push it away and be able to function, easier then he would have expected it to be. He couldn't quite explain it, but he wasn't going to question it. "Yes, lets."

She smiled again, balanced up on her toes to kiss his cheek and hand him the briefcase. She felt a little lighter now, even if there was still so much darkness festering over them from what had happened. For now, Elle found it easy to turn a blind eye. She scooped up her bag and headed downstairs, peeking out the doorway first. It looked clear, and she stepped out, electricity at her fingertips, just in case.

Gabriel clutched the briefcase in his hands as he followed Elle out the door. So far so good. Maybe no one had discovered or linked them to the bodies yet. "Do you know how to drive or should I drive?" He asked as they approached the car.

"You should drive," she said with a hesitant smile, clutching the bags and looking up and down the street cautiously. "I don't have the keys, but you have telekinesis." Maybe it was a little soon to ask so much of his powers, but desperate times and all.

"Couldn't you just jump start it with your electricity?" He teased with a small smirk on his lips. Nornally, he would be excited to have the chance to test the limits of his power, but as it was, he was a little bit nervous. What if he couldn't do it?

She shrugged a little, reached to caress the back of his hand fleetingly, tickling him with a playful hum of energy. "Maybe," she answered, returning his smile. "But I can't unlock it," she whispered conspiratorially.

"I guess you can't," He murmured back, laughing softly. The tickle of electricity was almost comforting, like she was back to herself again. It was nice. He concentrated as hard as he could and twisted his hand, managing to unlock the doors.

She breathed a grateful sigh at the click, pausing to kiss his cheek again with a small spark. She felt like she just needed to keep touching him--not only, now, for something solid to ground her, but for comfort, for a reminder that they were still there, together. Then she opened the door, throwing her bag in the backseat and climbing across the console to the other side, leaving the door ajar for him.

He was grateful for the little touches and sparks. It helped to keep his thoughts away from the dark place he had been stuck in earlier. Which made it much easier for him function and do what he had to. He climbed into the car next to her, shutting the door. He clicked his seat belt and then twisted his hand a few times, trying to use his telekinesis to start the car. It stalled a few times, and then finally, he got it going.
